We continue to review previous generation Nissan Altima cars, this time it is 3rd gen facelifted version. The first spacious Altima built on Nissan FF-L platform.

The third generation Nissan Altima appeared in 2001 as 2002 model year car. The 2005 Nissan Altima is a facelifted version, with a new grille, redesigned interior, and optional DVD-based navigation system.

Engine line up

The car was available with 3 engine options, the first two remains 2011 Nissan Altima – 2.5L inline 4 cylinder engine with the output of 175 hp. The second one is 3.5 liter V6 rated 250 hp and 249 ft lb of torque.

2005 Nissan Altima was available with 5 speed manual transmission as a standard and 4 speed automatic for I4 version and 5-speed manumatic (automatic transmission with ability to change gears manually) for V6. Top V6 version with automatic 5-speed gearbox has 0-60 mph time of only 6.2 seconds.

Unlike the next generation Altima, 2005 Nissan Altima has special sport version called SE-R. It has more powerful V6 engine (260 hp), upgraded exhaust system and suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels and new brakes. It also has different bumpers and side skirts. The sporty version was equipped with 6 speed manual transmission as a standard with optional 5 speed manumatic.

Trim levels

2005 Nissan Altima was available in 5 trim levels: base 2.5, 2.5S, 3.5SE, 3.5SL and 3.5 SE-R. The basic model has velour interior trimming, power windows, power steering, tilt and telescopic steering wheel. S version has additional height adjustable driver seat, keyless remote door locks, cruise control, air filter, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with 6 speakers.

2005 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE featuring 8-way power driver seat with adjustable lumbar support, power mirrors, audio and cruise controls on leather-wrapped steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels. 3.5 SL trim adding heated front seats, leather trimmed interior, heated mirrors, trip computer, universal remote transmitter, climate control, Bose premium sound system with 8 speakers.

SE-R with 5 speed manuatic has the same features as 3.5SE except sport seats and Bose premium sound system.

The overall consumer reviews on 2005 Nissan Altima is positive. As favorite points, people admit that the car has spacey interior with large trunk, powerful engines, handles well. But the car has certain drawbacks – catalytic neutralizer issue and oil leaks on 2.5L engine. Some people come across with severe engine problems, but the most owners admit that the 2005 Nissan Altima is reliable.
