All-new Mazda CX-3 Is The Most Compact SUV of a Brand


In the autumn of 2014, Los Angeles hosted the long-awaited debut of the compact crossover CX-3, information about which was kept for a long time in the strictest secrecy. The novelty immediately impressed the guests of the autoshow with its stylish and bold appearance, and then increased the degree of impressions with the partially disclosed technical parameters of the car.

Kodo design

The Mazda CX-3 has an overall length of 168.3″, a wheelbase of 101.1″, a width of 69.4″ and a height not exceeding 61″. The ground clearance of this Mazda is moderate 6.2″. The impudent and daring appearance of the novelty is especially emphasized by the predatory front end with a slanting optics look, the visor of the air intake and the massive grille of the radiator.

The smooth contours of the body, which received an impressive amount of high-strength steels in its design, are elegantly diluted with interesting stamps, and the fodder is decorated with a pretty bumper and two exhaust pipe fittings.

Borrowed from compact

The interior of the novelty received a classic 5-seater layout, and its design is borrow from the interior of the Mazda2 of the latest generation, but some elements (for example, the design of door panels) is unique for Mazda CX-3.

To the layout of the internal space of the crossover, the Japanese approached very carefully. For example, the rear row of seats is located just above the front, and the seats are shifted to the center, which should improve the view from the rear row.

In addition, it is worth noting that the position of all seats, as well as the shape of the Mazda CX-3 door panels are designed to simplify the process of landing in the cabin.

Compact Skyactive

In Europe, the CX-3 crossover will be offered with three variants of the power plant. Gasoline 4-cylinder unit of the Skyactiv-G line with a working volume of 2.0 liters, a direct fuel injection and Start/Stop system, will be offered in two versions of the power, but the developers do not disclose the exact information about them.

There also will be a 4-cylinder 1.5-liter diesel engine Skyactiv-D 1.5, the specification of which is also kept secret (according to unconfirmed data, the diesel power is 105 hp, and the torque does not exceed 184 ft lb). All engines can be aggregated as with a new 6-speed manual, or with a 6-speed automatic called Skyactiv-Drive, which received a different torque converter and a number of other improvements. At the heart of the Mazda CX-3 is the Skyactiv platform, and some of the chassis elements are new.

Contrary to all the skeptics, the CX-3 will be offered with both front and all-wheel drive based on an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. The front suspension in all cases will be independent with the McPherson struts, but in rear it is likely two variants of the layout: a semi-independent torsion bar for front-wheel drive modifications and an independent multi-link for all-wheel drive.

Brakes on all wheels are planned to be installed disc, and rack and pinion steering gear will receive electric power.

Mazda CX-3 can be equipped with a projection display, a range of modern electronic security systems, active cruise control and a multimedia system Mazda Connect with a connection to the Internet. In the Japanese market, this model will be released in the spring of 2015, a little later the car will appear in the US, to Europe it will get closer to the fall.
