2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio – first SUV of the brand debuted in LA


The future first Italian-born manufacturer SUV now acquired its own name. FCA Group in the person of its head Sergio Marchionne announced the news: 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio will be the first Alfa Romeo crossover.

Intra-index, however, the crossover is much more misunderstood: Tipo 949 D-SUV. The Stelvio name chosen in honor of the Stelvio Pass in Northern Italy, which is the second in the ranking of Alps by height (9045 feet above sea level).

Perhaps the public version of Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV will be shown in the Los Angeles Motor Show, and sales will start from the summer of 2017.

To successfully compete with German competitiors such as Audi Q5 and BMW X3 the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio should have comparative price. So, the basic trim is expected to have a price tag around $40,000. Whilst the top-trim extreme 500 HP version will be available for more than $50,000.

The basis of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio crossover will be used Giorgio Modular Platform, presented earlier in a sedan Giulia. Previously known that Stelvio crossover will not be the record for size: most likely, “sports crossover” will be closer to the compact BMW X3 (183.3 in).

Of course, for the first and foremost main purpose of crossover Alfa Romeo will be created … not really for the city. The crossover is equipped with a proprietary Alfa Romeo Q4 all-wheel drive system, which normally sends 100% of torque to the rear wheels, but can share it 50/50 between the front and rear axle while needed.

Length and height dimensions of the Stelvio one of the smallest in the class – 4680 mm (184.2 in) and 1650 mm (64.9 in), respectively, but the width is one of the biggest – 2160 mm (85 inch) with rearview mirrors.

In Los Angeles Stelvio presented in the top version called Quadrifoglio: it is equipped with 2.9-liter petrol V6, the same as in Giulia QV, which develops 505 hp of power and 445 ft lb of torque. This engine is aggregated with 8-speed automatic transmission. Other features included in top version are sports suspension tuning, larger diameter rims and powerful brakes.

From zero to 60 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio accelerates in just 3.8 seconds and its top speed is 177 miles per hour (285 km/h).

A little later, Alfa Romeo will show less powerful modifications of the crossover – with a 2.0-liter petrol engine and a 2.2-liter turbodiesel.

There is no actual information regarding the interior of Stelvio SUV, but it is expected to have the same architecture as Guilia. It is more likely to get a bit different dashboard and center console, but the overall feeling of sport will remain. Undoubtedly Alfa Romeo SUV will feature premium leather upholstery, aluminum inserts, all-power accessories and other expensive equipment.

It is amazing that FCA is still keeping the actual appearance top secret, and there are a lot of concept renders, which provides different possible design of the first Alfa SUV. There are even spy shots of SUV with design similar to 2003 concept vehicle Alfa Romeo Kamal.
However, insiders claimed that Stelvio will be look much alike Guilia.

The prospects of the first Alfa Romeo SUV is rather vague. We could know a little about the model, but it certainly will be released, sooner or later.
