Audi A8 Needs a Serious Update


In November 2009, Audi at the American Design Miami exhibition held an official presentation of its flagship model of new generations – the full-size A8 sedan, which survived the third coming (designation “D4”). At the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010, European car inspections were held, after which it immediately went on sale in the German market.

Three years later at the motor show in Frankfurt, an automaker from Ingolstadt exposed the updated version of the Audi A8 for the public. Restyling affected the appearance and interior of the car, made some changes to the power line and, most importantly, added new high-tech “chips” to its arsenal.

Cold German Design

The “third” Audi A8 is a typical example of the laconic style of the German brand, in which a heavy-duty representativeness adjoins the grace of forms. The exterior of the sedan is a harmonious embodiment of solidity, dynamism and power. Large grille, faceted front lighting, wide waist line and diamond-shaped exhaust pipes give the car a spectacular and impressive look.

The standard A8 has the following body dimensions: 202.1″ in length, 76.7″ in width and 57.4″ in height. The wheelbase is 117.7″. The extended version of the Long is 5.1″ longer, 0.4″ higher, and the distance between the axles is 5.1″ longer.

Minimalistic but Luxurious

The interior of the Audi A8 of the third generation pleases with light and elegant lines, impeccable front panel architecture, attention to detail and high-quality finishing materials.

A beautiful combination of instruments with a large display, a stylish multifunction steering wheel and a presentable central console with a large screen multimedia center, an air conditioner unit and a touchpad MMI touch – the decoration of the car can be called one of the best in the class.

The front seats of the German A8 are equipped with a huge set of electrical adjustments and provide an excellent fit. The rear sofa in the base sedan is formally three-seater, but it is clearly molded for two people. On the car with an elongated base there are individual folding seats with massage and an entertainment system with a pair of colored tablets.

Wide Engine Range

The volume of the almost rectangular luggage compartment of the Audi A8 is 18.3 cu ft (the stretched car has 0.35 cu ft less). Under the floor can be placed a full reserve, which reduces the stock of useful space of 1.5 cu ft.

The Audi A8 of the 3rd generation, five power units are available, combined with an 8-band automatic transmission tiptronic and proprietary technology quattro – four-wheel drive with an asymmetrical Torsen differential, dividing traction between front and rear in a ratio of 40:60, and an active rear differential.

The diesel engine for the sedan is offered two, but each of them “flaunts” the turbocharging and direct injection: The first option is a six-cylinder V-engine with a volume of 3.0 liters, generating 250 horsepower at 4000-4500 rpm and 405 ft lb of torque at 1500- 3000 rpm. The second is a 4.1-liter V8 unit with a capacity of 385 “horses” at 3,750 rpm, the output of which is 626 ft lb at 2000-2750 rpm.

From the place to the first “hundred” diesel “eight” are accelerated in 4.7-6.1 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph (speed is limited by electronics). The petrol part combines V-shaped “six” and “eight” with direct fuel supply and supercharging of 3.0 and 4.0 liters respectively: The “younger” engine produces 310 horsepower at 5200-6500 rpm and 324 lb ft of peak thrust at 2900-4750 Rpm, “Senior” – 435 horsepower at 5100-6000 rpm and 442 ft lb of torque at 1500-5000 rpm.

They provide the Audi A8 of the third generation with an acceleration of up to 60 after 4.5-5.7 seconds, a top speed of 155 mph. The long-bodied G-8 is also equipped with a 6.3-liter naturally aspirated W12 monster with a distributed fuel injection, in whose arsenal are 500 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 460 ft lb of maximum torque available from 4750 rpm. This sedan does the exercise to conquer the first sixty in just 4.6 seconds, and its capabilities, like on other versions, are limited to 155 mph.


The third Audi A8 is built on a modular MLB architecture and is fully endowed with an aluminum body. All versions of the car are equipped with an independent suspension with adaptive pneumatic racks – on double wishbones in front and on trapezoidal levers from behind. At the A8 is used electric power steering with adjustable gear ratio (depending on the speed of driving). The executive saloon is equipped with ventilated disc brakes, assisted by modern electronic assistants.
