2017 BMW M3 Become Sedan Only 6 Cylinder Beast

The fifth generation BMW M3 sedan was presented as part of the showroom in Detroit.

The novelty has grown a little thinner, has got a more frisky motor, tried on a new design and received dozens of technical innovations that made the BMW M3 sedan one of the most technological and attractive in its class.

After the transition to a new generation BMW M3 model range become smaller. Previously, the model line included not only a sedan, but a coupe with a cabriolet, but now the coupe stood out in an independent model – the BMW M4.

However, perhaps this is for the better, as the focus now will be on the sedan, which has something to offer its customers.

The Compact and Sporty

The fifth BMW M3 received a more daring appearance with an aggressive front bumper, hood with a hump, dynamic body contours and stylish decor elements in the face of chrome inserts, sport exhaust, cute wheel disks and a neat mini spoiler on the trunk lid.

In the manufacture of body parts, the Germans actively used aluminum and carbon fiber, from which a roof, in particular, was made. All this allowed to significantly reduce the weight of the novelty, so now the minimum curb weight of the BMW M3 F80 is only 3439 lbs.

As for dimensions, the length of the sedan’s body is 183.8 in, the length of the wheelbase is 110.7″, the width without mirrors is 73.8″, together with the mirrors it is increased to 80.1″, and the height of the novelty is limited to 56.2″. The width of the front and rear track is respectively 62.1″ and 63.1″. The height of the ground clearance is 4.8″.

Inner World

The four-seater salon of this sedan is created on the basis of the BMW 3-Series F30, but differs a big bias in the direction of sporting design and the presence of bucket front seats. In other aspects, the salon of the novelty is practically indistinguishable from the standard 3-series. Note that the useful volume of the trunk in the M3 is now 16.9 cu ft.

Now Only Six

F80 received a completely new engine, which replaced the old V8 with a output of 420 horses. The novelty is now equipped with a six-cylinder power unit TwinPower Turbo S55 with two turbochargers and a working volume of 3.0 liters (2979 cm³), created on the basis of the N55 engine.

The engine is equipped with a 24-valve timing system, a direct fuel injection system, a throttle-free mixing system, a height adjustment system and an intake valve lift time, as well as inlet and outlet phase shifters. The maximum power of the engine due to modernization is raised to a mark of 431 hp. (317 kW), which develop in the range from 5500 to 7300 rpm.

The peak torque is at 405 ft lb, held in the range of 1850 – 5500 rpm. At the base, the engine is aggregated with the new 6-speed manual made by Getrag, which allows the sedan to accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 4.3 seconds. As an option, you can install a 7-speed robotic with two clutches, which will reduce the time of the starting acceleration to the mark of 4.1 seconds with the “Launch control” function turned on.

The upper limit of speed in both cases is limited to electronics at 155 mph, but due to the additional package “M Driver’s Package” it can be moved up to a mark of 174 mph.

Ultimate 3-series

The fifth generation of the BMW M3 has received the F80 platform index – most of the chassis is borrowed from the BMW 3-Series F30. From the front, the developers used an independent suspension on the McPherson struts, and from the rear, an independent multi-link suspension was used.

It should be noted that the geometry of the front and rear subframe was changed, many elements received more aluminum in their composition, and most of the silent blocks were replaced by hinges. In the database, the novelty receives disc brakes on all wheels (4-piston front and 2-piston rear), which can optionally be replaced by carbon-ceramic with 6-piston calipers in front and 4-piston rear.

Steering is complemented by an electromechanical power steering with three modes of operation: “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport +”. Sedan was rear-wheel drive with an active differential with electronic control of wheel locking and a lightweight cardan shaft made of strong carbon fiber.

The degree of blockage of each wheel can now range from 0 to 100%, which allows you to use the differential as a means of assisting in the passage of steep turns or the withdrawal of a car from a controlled drift.
