BMW X1 Become More Like a SUV and Get Full Redesign

In early June 2015, the BMW officially declassified the compact crossover X1 of a new, second generation, the public premiere of which will be held in September on the show in Frankfurt.

The car not only underwent radical changes, having received a fresh BMW design with a redesigned interior and a new powertrain range, but also changed the ideology by going to the front-wheel drive platform.

Taller and Roomier

The design of the second generation X1 received the F48 index is made in accordance with the current style of BMW, and its design shows a clear relationship with the bigger crossovers. Due to the harmonious build, the car looks much more expensive than its predecessor, and it really looks like a SUV, rather than lifted station wagon as before.

In the exterior of the BMW X1 2nd generation has got new headlights with LED component, branded nostril grille with vertical bars, stylish tail lights, visually extending the machine, and a pair of exhaust pipe fittings. The sweeping profile is attached to the falling roof in the rear part and the sill line rising to it, and the off-road arsenal of the crossover is supported by plastic protective elements along the lower perimeter of the body.

The length of the BMW X1 in the second generation is 175.4″, the height is 62.5″, the width is 71.6″. The wheelbase is 105.1″, and the ground clearance is 7.2″. In general, this means that the car has become shorter, but wider and higher than its ancestor.

More of Gadgets

The interior of the compact crossover in its outlines and architecture gives a clear identity to the Bavarian premium brand – a plump rudder with three-spoke design and control elements, a clear and informative instrument cluster, and a presentable central console.

The 6.5-inch display of the multimedia center iDrive (optional – 8.8-inch) is the leading role on the front panel, below which separate music and air conditioning control units (for a surcharge – a two-zone climate control) are sheltered. In the arsenal of the new BMW X1 – quality materials for finishing, including soft plastic, good fabric in the upholstery of seats, replaced in expensive versions with Dakota leather, inserts made of aluminum and expensive oak.

Compared with the first model, the second generation crossover has become more friendly for riders, and landing is more off-road like (the seats of the first and second rows are mounted higher by 1.4″ and 2.5″ respectively).

In front there are comfortable seats with a comfortable profile and pronounced side support rollers are installed. The rear seat is more suitable for two passengers – the third will be interfered with by the protruding floor tunnel. The stock of space in abundance in all directions, and optionally the rear seats is equipped with longitudinal settings (5.1″) and adjustable backrest angle.

The volume of the luggage compartment at the X1 F48 – 17.8 cubic ft if all seats are in place. Starting from the base trim the back seat folds in parts 40:20:40, which allows to increase the capacity to 54.7 cu ft. For a fee, a folding front passenger seat is available.

Wide Engine Range

The range of premium car consists of four-cylinder petrol turbo engines and diesel units meeting the Euro-6 environmental requirements. Gearboxes are two – 6-speed manual (available only for the basic version on diesel fuel) and the 8-speed Steptronic automatic, the drive layout can be either the front one – sDrive, or AWD – xDrive.

A few words about the latter – the BMW X1 is equipped with a modernized four-wheel drive transmission with the Haldex multi-clutch in the rear gearbox and electronic stability technology. Under normal conditions, all the traction goes to the front wheels, and if necessary – up to 100% of its share is sent to the rear axle.

Gasoline engines are direct injection, turbocharged, variable valve timing and valve travel adjustment: In the basic version (on sDrive20i and xDrive20i), the 2.0 liter I4 produces 192 horsepower at 5000-6000 rpm and 206 ft lb of torque at 1250-4600 rpm. And in a more powerful (on xDrive25i) – 231 “horse” and 258 ft lb of torque at similar speeds. With the senior unit only the all-wheel drive is combined, as a result of which the crossover is provided for acceleration in 6.5 seconds to the sixty, top speed of 146 mph.

The “younger” is also equipped with a front-wheel drive, which provides acceleration from 0 to 60 in 7.4-7.7 seconds, a peak speed of 138-140 mph.

Each of the three 2.0-liter turbodiesels has the turbocharger with variable geometry, the maximum pressure of 2000 bar and Common Rail diesel injection: Under the bonnet of the initial version of sDrive18d, a 150-hp unit (peak power at 4000 rpm), developing 243 ft lb of torque at 1750-2750 rpm.

The first sixty such BMW X1 exchanges after 9.2 seconds and conquers the limit of 127 mph.

In the arsenal of the intermediate modification xDrive20d – “four” with a power output of 190 hp, available from 4000 rpm, and a yield of 295 ft lb at 1750-2750 rpm.

Such characteristics make it possible to accelerate to the first sixty in 7.6 seconds, and the speed dialing stops only when it reaches 136 mph.

The “top” version on diesel fuel is xDrive25d. Its engine releases 231 horsepower at 4400 rpm and 331 ft lb of torque in the range of 1500 to 3000 rpm. Acceleration from a place to 60 mph – 6.6 seconds, top speed is 136 mph.

With the change of generation BMW X1 moved to the front-wheel drive platform UKL with a transversely located power unit. The front uses the traditional McPherson struts (aluminum and steel are combined in the suspension), and at the rear is mounted a steel multi-link design with spaced shock absorbers and springs.

Despite the change of ideology, the crossover has an ideal distribution of mass along the axes – 50:50, and in the loaded condition it weighs from 3439 lbs to 3582 lbs. As before, the car has an electric power steering with variable characteristics and ventilated discs of the brake system on each of the four wheels.
