2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV Is The First Affordable Electric With Proper Range


At the Consumer Electronics Show, held in January 2016, the official premiere of the pre-series electric hatchback Chevrolet Bolt EV, which continued the ideas of the same-name conceptual model, was presented exactly one year ago at the exhibition in Detroit. But before the general public, the serial five-door appeared in a few days – at the North American International Auto Show, surprising everyone with a unique powerplant.

Outside, Bolt looks attractive and pretty futuristic, and at the same time in its appearance there are no superfluous elements that could cause rejection. The compact but very muscular body of the American electric car includes stylish lighting fixtures with fully LED stuffing, powerful bumpers with a pronounced relief and a large glazing area, and the ease of adding a curved sill line and black back racks creating the effect of a soaring roof. In terms of its external dimensions, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is close to the B-class cars in the European classification: 164″ in length, 69.4″ in width and 62.7″ in height. The gap between the axles of the electric car is 102.3″, but its ground clearance is modest 4.5″. The five-door weighs minimum 3580 lbs.

The interior of Bolt EV is made in a modern, but minimalist style, and the main accent is made on a 10.2-inch touch screen of the information and entertainment system, located on the central console, under which the original air conditioning unit is placed. For the relief multifunctional steering wheel, another 8-inch display is based, which functions as a combination of instruments. The electric hatchback demonstrates quality materials of finish and a good level of internal execution.

Despite its compact dimensions, the Chevrolet Bolt EV offers plenty of space for the driver and four passengers. In front are correctly positioned seats with wide ranges of settings, and at the back – a comfortable seat (albeit somewhat flat in appearance). In the standard state, the baggage compartment of Bolt holds up to 16.8 cubic feet of luggage. The back seat could be folded in two asymmetrical parts (no flat floor, unfortunately), which brings the useful volume of the trunk to 56.6 cubic feet.

Serial production of Chevrolet Bolt EV started at the end of 2016 and already in December it appeared in the dealers of the brand in the US at a price of 37,500 dollars. In the basic configuration, the electric car has: ten airbags, a digital combination of instruments, a 10.2-inch multimedia screen, air conditioning, a full power accessories, heated front seats, and a wide range of electronic assistants. In addition, a large list of optional equipment is available for a five-door.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is powered by a three-phase AC motor that generates 204 horsepower and 265 ft lb of torque, which is directed to the front axle wheels by a single-speed gearbox. Such characteristics allow the electric hatchback to accelerate to 90 mph, accelerating to the sixty in less than 7 seconds (it takes only 3 seconds to accelerate to 31 mph). The American electric car uses a set of lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 60 kW/h (288 cells are arranged in 10 modules), which provides about 200 miles of run at one charge. To fully charge the batteries from a regular household network using a standard 7.2 kW it takes 9 hours, but the optional system for connecting to a DC station allows you to replenish the “tanks” by half in just half an hour.

The basis for the Chevrolet Bolt EV is the front-drive platform G2XX with independent McPherson struts in front and a semi-independent design with a torsion beam behind. The compact electric car is equipped with a rack-and-pinion steering system, supplemented by an electric power steering, and disc brakes on all wheels with ABS and EBD systems. As an option for a hatchback, a special driving mode with a peak intensity of regenerative deceleration is available, allowing the driver to control acceleration and braking only with the accelerator pedal.
