Genesis G70 Will Challenge Compact Premium Cars

G70 is an upcoming premium class sedan, from the new Genesis brand.

The Genesis brand of autos has come from the Hyundai stable, it’s like the Infiniti and Lexus of Hyundai. The latest offering for them is a small (ish) sedan that has been quoted as “near luxury” by the boss of Genesis.

We think it will be more of a BMW 3-Series competitor than anything else, it looks to have some sort of sporting pretention, and if they fit the right motor, it’ll be a blast.
The car has been out testing on public roads in Germany, but under heavy camouflage, so we don’t really know what it’s going to look like 100%, but we can get a good idea of the overall shape and stance.

When to Expect?

We think that the new 2017 Genesis G70 will be available in late 2016, perhaps just squeezing in to 2017 if there are any hold ups with production.

Nothing has been announced officially, but looking at the competition, we’d expect to see the base model selling for around $37,000, putting it square against the 3-Series, A4 and the other European sedans in this class.

Given that Genesis is a new brand, it isn’t so much about redesign. But what can we expect from the new G70?

Possible Engine Range

We think there will be a few choices when it comes to powertrain. Rumors hint at Genesis using the potent 3.3 liter twin turbo V6 from the G80 and G90 in the flagship model, perhaps having a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo as the base, or maybe the 3.8 liter naturally aspirated V6 from the G80. Either way, it sounds like Genesis are willing to take the fight to the sportier Europeans. There is talk of a hybrid, but that will come later in the production cycle.

All options will be fitted with the Genesis 8-speed auto transmission and will drive the rear wheels as standard, although we think there may be an all-wheel drive option available.

Overall Styling

As regards the overall styling, Genesis describe it as “athletic elegance”, although what that actually means is anyone’s guess. Yes, it has some sporty detailing, it will undoubtedly be the sportiest model in the Genesis stable, but any more than that, we don’t know.

Inside the cabin will be high grade leather and wood with machined aluminum detailing. Expect to see the usual array of toys and tech, in particular, we think that there will be a massive curved screen in the dash, controlling the infotainment via hand gestures.

G70 might be a perfect rival for 3-series and Audi A4, providing at least more affordable pricing with the same level of equipment.
