Jeep Gladiator Rumors: New Pickup Truck in 2017?

Jeep are to extend their market (and model range) with a Wrangler based pickup called the Gladiator. It is expected to go on sale in 2017 according to sources speaking to Automotive News.

Fiat-Chrysler are developing a new pickup truck on the old Jeep Wrangler platform, there have been few details released, so we don’t know exactly how it will look, but we’re guessing that it will be good.

The only real information that we know from Fiat-Chrysler is that the new model will be based on a proper chassis and will use lightweight aluminum panels.

We also know that the Jeep engineers have been working on a pickup that’s based upon the Wrangler, to be called the Gladiator, it will most likely have a single cabin, but as no confirmed details have yet been released, we don’t truly know.

Concept and Rumors

Rumors are constantly being spread about the appearance of a pickup truck from Jeep, perhaps only beaten by rumors of the revival of the Chevy El Camino.

The modern Jeep Wrangler is assembled at a plant in Toledo City, OH, close to the facility that produces the most popular American icon, the Cherokee. Management at Jeep intend to move production of the Cherokee to yet another facility, meaning additional capacity for the Wrangler, thereby saving not just jobs, but the facility also.

With some minor refitting, the plant will also produce the Ram 1500 pickup.

Same Interior

The new 2017 model year Jeep pickup truck will more than likely have the same interior as the model that it’s based upon – the Wrangler. Being the ultimate in sport-utility, it will have special, stain resistant upholstery and plenty of cubby holes for storage.

If it has the same body as the prototype, it will be a single cab, with space in the back only for children or pets.

Brutal Looks

Just last year, there were rumors that Fiat-Chrysler were planning on abandoning the chassis type construction for the Wrangler, but after complaints from customers, the management have decided to postpone the plans ‘indefinitely’.

Automotive News claims that the development of a Wrangler pickup truck is already underway, but no-one really knows if it will take on the shape of the Gladiator concept car (based on the Ram 1500) or whether it will be something more akin to the Jeep Wrangler Red Rock Responder, presented at the Easter Safari earlier this year.

Either way, it is likely to take on the competition in the form of the Chevrolet Colorado Z71 TrailHawk and the Toyota Tacoma TRD Offroad.
