Although Marchionne believes that the Jeep needs to lose some weight, it is thought that the chassis and running gear will be conventional, but the platform will be fitted with lightweight aluminum panels to help reduce weight and improve fuel economy.

Despite his earlier arguments, now, Marchionne declares that “2017 Jeep Wrangler will be really a lot of aluminum, but not full of aluminum”. This means one thing —the SUV will receive some elements of the body (e.g. the hood or fenders) from lightweight metal to reduce the weight, however the main frame and structure are still made of steel.

No official figures have yet been released regarding the price; it is thought that the added cost of aluminum panels will be offset against cheaper engine options, hopefully meaning that prices will remain static; the base model soft top should start around $30,000.

Unfortunately, production of aluminum panels and the like isn’t possible on the old production line at Toledo, they will need to build a whole new facility to put this aluminum panelled vehicle into production.
