The Return of The Hatch King – New 2017 Golf

VW Golf is a very long-lasting model, in production for over 40 years, means the main brand for Volkswagen (and still the best-selling compact hatchback in Europe). That means a lot for the VW Group, so engineers and designers keep updating the car, just not to give any chances for competitors. They take more like an evolutional approach, so it is unlikely that you distinguish new Golf with the previous one in first sight; however, there are plenty of notable changes.

Today, Volkswagen are busy repairing their reputation; the diesel emission scandal has really knocked a hole out of their business, but let’s be clear on this, certainly until VW were caught cheating, massaging the figures (be that fuel, economy or power) has been around since the invention of the automobile.

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf is available in your local Volkswagen showroom now.

The base price (based on a 1.8T 4-door S Manual) starts at $19,895, although you could probably get one with a significant discount from that price – we wouldn’t expect to pay more than $18,000.

Any Changes In Design?

Despite a raft of updates, the 2017 Golf is unmistakably all VW Golf – line up all of the generations of Golf’s and you’ll easily identify the timeline, this new Golf is no different.

Available in both 2 and 4 door hatches, along with a wagon; the Golf Alltrack – essentially a Golf SportWagen with taller suspension and all-wheel drive as standard. VW claim that it has more luggage capacity than a smaller SUV.

Engine Wise

Under the hood, we’ll see a range of different motors, all gas powered (no false diesel figures here!); 2 x inline 4-cylinder, both turbo charged, the base spec making 170 BHP and 199 lb/ft (1.8 liter), the sportier GTi has a further 40 – 50 BHP (dependent on spec) with a 2.0 liter motor and then a fire breathing 292 BHP Turbo4.

Transmissions range from a 5 speed manual through to 6 speed manual and a 6 speed dual clutch auto, again, all dependent on which particular model you buy and how many dollars you hand over. Speaking of options … adjustable and active damping is available as an option of standard on the higher spec versions.

As you may expect, the cabin is fitted with high quality trim – yes it’s plastic, but it just seems a much better grade of interior than you’d expect from a domestic model.
A 5” touchscreen audio system is standard, as is USB connectivity and Bluetooth.
