2017 Volkswagen Touareg release date, specs, video

The large VW crossover could be subjected to the influence of the concept CrossBlue, which means we should expect a new, evolutionary styling reminiscent of the smaller 2016 Tiguan with a new ultra-sharp design and premium-like interior.

2017 Volkswagen Touareg redesign

The new VW will use the MLB platform, which means that it may be lighter than other models representative of the modern generation. A large number of components will be taken from the next Porsche Cayenne. It is also expected that at least one version will be equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

As before, the Touareg will be a close relative of the Audi Q7, and thus, the third generation of the SUV will move to a completely new platform with a lot of components lighter than those made from more traditional materials. This same platform has managed to give life to the first SUV in the history of the Bentley brand called the Bentley Bentayga. Thus, the pedigree of future innovations is of the highest degree.

The appearance of the car is likely to change in accordance with the new VW design style. The closest variation of the design belongs to the CrossBlue concept car, with the production version of the Touareg potentially getting a similar look with sharp edges and a more aggressive design. However, some experts have claimed that the CrossBlue will be the basis of a completely new VW SUV, with a 7-seat interior and equipped with economic engines mainly for sale in developing countries.

2017 Volkswagen Touareg price

There is no officially confirmed information regarding the price range for the new 2017 model year Touareg, but we might expect that the basic car equipped with a V6 engine will cost from $48,000. It is more expensive than the current generation of Touareg, but it’s important to note that new generation car will be bigger and is likely to be better equipped.

2017 Volkswagen Touareg release date

Obviously, marketers and planners from Wolfsburg like the idea of restyling and if you intend to make the brand more popular within the SUV segment, in which there are currently only two VW players — the Tiguan and the Touareg, you need to change something. The last time the Touareg was updated was in 2010 and after six years, enough time has passed to need to refresh the line, especially considering that its little brother, the Tiguan, has already received a new look. It has recently been reported that a period of one year has been allotted to develop the new generation, so the latest generation model should arrive in 2017.

Release date: late 2016

In October last year the paparazzi were able to catch sight of the new test “mules” of the Touareg, attempting to hide as Audi Q7s. This means that the new car will likely be released either at the end of 2016 or in early 2017.

The reduced body weight means that developers will not need to skimp on dimensions, so the 2017 Touareg will have enough space for passengers. However, it is not yet known whether the company will continue to adhere to including a third row of seats, and, after all, the production version of the seven-seater CrossBlue concept positioned as a premium flagship in our opinion indicates that the Touareg will remain with a 5-seater cabin, if released.

The architecture of the vehicle will be based on a MLB Evo platform suitable for almost all cars. It will be first applied to the Audi Q7 SUV in 2016, then on its base will be created Bentley and Porsche models. Experts know that in reality the process of developing the new Touareg is associated with the next generation Porsche Cayenne, which will appear in 2017.

There is a very high probability that we will see similar motifs in style as in the new generation Volkswagen Passat, which is only now entering the market.

2017 Volkswagen Touareg engines and specs

The engine will be more economical, and in the hybrid version will be provided with a capacious battery, which can be recharged using standard household power. Despite the current level of efficiency, the engine power will increase. Also, the new Touareg will do much less damage to the environment than the existing version. The main priority for modern European cars is the level of fuel consumption and to need to be ecologically friendly.

It is likely that the third generation Volkswagen Touareg will be presented with the same engine line as the Q7, including the hybrid versions. Depending on the market, petrol and diesel engines along with an electric version will be available.

So, on the European market the SUV will debut with two 3.0-liter turbo engines. The gasoline 3.0L engine produces 333 hp (324 lb-ft) and the diesel – 272 hp (442 lb-ft). Both engines are paired with 8-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration from zero to sixty with the petrol engine takes around 6 seconds while with the diesel it takes 6.5 seconds. However, it claims to be extremely fuel efficient, achieving over 35 mpg in the combined cycle. It might be possible that the entry-level engine will be a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine producing 252 hp (272 lb-ft), along with the three-liter diesel TDI ultra turbodiesel, which develops 218 hp and 368 ft lb of torque. These versions are likely to be unavailable on the North American market.

There will be a more economical hybrid modification, which will have much in common with the one in the Audi Q7 e-tron, with a 258-horsepower 3.0-liter TDI turbodiesel and a 94 kW electric motor integrated into the automatic transmission, as well as a set of lithium-ion batteries. The total output of such a powerunit is 373 hp (516 lb-ft). The 2017 VW Touareg will be able to accelerate from zero to sixty in 6.0 seconds. The maximum speed is 139 mph, and in pure electric mode it will able to reach 34 mph.

There are also rumors regarding the new Touareg GTE – a plug-in hybrid version, equipped with 2.0-liter TFSI engine mentioned above, with a high capacity Li-ion battery. With such powertrain GTE version might travel on EV-only mode at least 30 miles.

Some rumors have claimed that VW AG will refuse to use V8 and V10 diesel versions on the next generation Touareg. Instead more economical V6 twin turbocharged diesels will be used.

The chasis will be similar to the next generation Audi Q7 and will have a constant all-wheel drive layout. Top-trim variants will have air suspension.

There are plans to use an innovative 10-speed automatic gearbox. It is likely that the new SUV will get this transmission as a single option.
