A new rumors of 2018 Dodge Barracuda appeared

People really love the names from the past, even if they belong to dead brands like Plymouth. Interestingly, the most popular rumors are connected to modern muscle cars. So, will FCA resurrect previously famous name, now under the Dodge brand? Let’s find out.

2018 Dodge Barracuda release date rumors

Appeared long before 2016, the rumors regarding the Dodge Barracuda release date are still fluctuating on the web – even without any confirmations from the brand representatives. One way or another, there is no smoke without fire. The car might be actually released in 2017-2018 and there might be a few versions what kind of Barracuda we might get.

2018 Dodge Barracuda possible versions of design

Unless there is no actual information regarding the car, we could only guess. Analytics has come up with at least three versions of what 2018 Dodge Barracuda might be, and they are pretty interesting.

Guess one: Barracuda is a Challenger modification

Just to remind, the original Barracuda (third generation) from the early 70s was actually a rebranding of Dodge Challenger. It was the most successful and popular car throughout the model history.

Fiat-Chrysler might use the ‘Cuda or Barracuda naming for a severe facelifted Challenger, which might also have upgraded engine. Since FCA has financial difficulties, this might be a proper name to promote the brand without major funding.

Guess two: Barracuda is a whole new model

The second guess is that 2018 Dodge Barracuda will be a new muscle car in Dodge lineup. Something between Charger and Challenger, or more likely as the most affordable muscle car. It is quite possible, but the problem is both Dodge’s muscles have very similar pricing and mostly identical engines. So, there is almost no place for Barracuda between them. If it is the less pricey one, so it must be less powerful and more compact – like an original Barracuda debuted in 1964.

Guess three: Barracuda is a codename

All information leaks might lead to the fact Barracuda is an inside codename of different model related to Chrysler or Dodge. It is likely to be some rebadged Alfa Romeo or Fiat car (also FCA brands), adopted for the United States market. This codename certainly drop hints about an affordable sportscar.

2018 Dodge Barracuda specs might upset muscle car fans

Barracuda simply cannot be more powerful than Challenger – the latter already has 707HP Hellcat version. So, taking into account the possibility of entry-level muscle car appearance, 2018 Barracuda might be equipped with turbocharged I4 and Pentastar V6 engines. The most powerful version will produce no more than 350HP, which makes the Barracuda sportier version of currently discontinued Dart. What is more heartbreaking for any muscle car enthusiast – the modern Barracuda might be FWD or AWD only.

When you are wrong, you are really wrong. The 70-74 ‘Cuda was most certainly not a re-badged Challenger. Both cars were engineered simultaneously by the 2 divisions to appeal to different types of people. The Challenger was meant to be more upscale, targeting the Cougar crowd. The Barracuda was the more basic version, but was very similar in overall shape. They are different enough that they don’t even share the same wheelbase. The Challenger has a longer wheelbase. Like many divisions of large car companies, the economics dictate a shared platform with as much interchangeablilty as possible, but the ‘Cuda is most certainly not a re-branded Challenger.

It is unlikely that Barracuda will be released - market don't require any more muscle cars. But this brand might be used for a different purpose - to design a compact sports car, for instance.
