The 2018 Model Year VW Touareg Will Be More Advanced In Every Aspect

When VW first introduced the Touareg, it was met with some scepticism, it seemed that Volkswagen were just jumping on the popular bandwagon without much thought as to what they were offering. However, it proved to be a popular vehicle, thanks mainly to the super reliability, styling and engineering; it was a well-priced SUV/Crossover from Europe.

The next release of the model will be the third generation, and VW are updating it significantly. Officially, VW haven’t released details of the new auto, but it has been seen (camouflaged) testing on public highways for a good number of months now.

Given that we’ve been seeing the 2018 Volkswagen Touareg testing on public highways, since early 2016, we think that VW will have the Touareg in the dealerships by the middle part of 2017.

Thanks to significant upgrades, we’re fully expecting Volkswagen to increase the price by more than inflation. This means that the base model will start in the region of $51,000. Although VW haven’t confirmed pricing structures yet.

What Are The Changes

Simply put, plenty of change.

There will be a new platform underpinning the 2018 Touareg; it will be built on the MLB platform, meaning significant weight reduction and an increase in space (without actually getting any bigger – 189” length and 75” wide).

Passenger comfort and space will be improved by some degree.

New Engines

Under the hood, we expect to see a new 3.0 liter V6 gas engine, capable of putting out around 300 horses, there will also be a hybrid version (using the same V6) which will be closer to 400 BHP.

There are rumors of a smaller 2.0 liter 4-cylinder gas engine, and redesigned V6 turbodiesel, but as to whether either of those will make their way to the U.S. remains to be seen – we don’t think that VW will ship the diesel, but the little 4 pot motor could make its way over here, but if it does, expect a reduced price from the previously mentioned $51,000.

On the exterior, it looks like VW will take the option to redesign the front end; new bumper, larger grille, thinner headlights and c-shaped daytime running lights.

At the back, we’ll see redesigned lighting and rear bumper. The overall look of the car will remain undoubtedly Touareg, but just updated for this third generation.

Advanced Tech Expected

Inside the cabin, we expect to see a number of changes, most notably around the tech fitted.

The concept that the new Touareg is based on had a massive 15” touchscreen; we don’t think that will make it to the production model, but we do think it will feature a bigger than average screen.
