The problem with making a list of the best gas mileage SUV’s is that for the main part, they are all very similar, and that there are many different categories of SUV; compact, mid-size, full size, luxury, performance … and of course, they are all going to give different results.
We should also factor in the Volkswagen factor; manufacturers test MPG figures under the most ideal conditions, perhaps maybe even ‘massage’ those figures a little. In the real world, hitting those expected MPG figures can be difficult.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe SE Ultimate – 21 MPG
With a 3.3 liter, 290 BHP V6 engine, the SE Ultimate packs quite a punch. Usual features; navigation, climate control, cruise control and traction.
2017 Audi Q7 2.0T Premium – 21 MPG

2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE – 22 MPG
Surprisingly, the Land Rover gives slightly better gas mileage. Fitted with a 240 BHP 2.0 liter intercooled motor driving a 9-speed auto transmission. Also has the Land Rover Terrain Response 4WD system.
2017 Infiniti QX60 – 22 MPG
Matching the Disco, the Infiniti uses a 3.5 liter 295 BHP V6, driving a two speed CVT transmission; usual features including traction control, all-wheel drive and cruise control.
2017 Land Rover Range Rover HSE Td6 – 25 MPG
A big jump up to 25 MPG, surprising from such a big vehicle. It has a 3.0 liter turbo diesel V6 which drives an 8-speed auto transmission and has 254 BHP.
2017 BMW X5 xDrive35d – 26 MPG
Compared to the others, the BMW is positively frugal, getting a massive 26 to the gallon.
