Facts About 10-speed Automatics

By

General Motors and Ford have come up with an amazing novelty. These automakers have created a new transmission offering you ten gears. What are the advantages of such approach and where it fails? Let’s try to learn it right away.

The spread between gears offered is relatively wide but not wider than existing transmissions have. In fact, it is 7.384 span which is not record breaking one. Some typical automatics have a spread which is wider. The widest automatic known today is 9.819 which belongs to Jeep Cherokee with nine gears.

Nonetheless, the spacing of individual gears is quite close. It helps to have the engine at peak power when acceleration is at the state of being full-throttled. Such approach is also good for towing facilities making them smooth.

When talking about overdrive ratio there is something to praise. The shift between gears ten and nine is almost imperceptible. It is made possible owing to low percentage drop. By the way switching to ninth gear provides better towing opportunities.

It is not surprising that newly born Raptor as well Camaro runs on EcoBoost engine. Nevertheless, it is interesting to know that both of these vehicles offer 10 speed automatic as a standard option. The fact is that EcoBoost provides RPM of low torque. It perfectly matches te gearbox with close ratios. Due to this fact, your engine will work in a balanced and safe manner eliminating situations when the engine gets boosted while transmission downshifts.

10-speed automatic is only 1 inch longer and 4 pounds heavier than current 6-speed transmission. It is made possible owing to gearsets which are simple planetary under the control of six clutches. It means that each detail has been designed very carefully. For instance, the converter of torque is 0.4 inches thinner and few pounds lighter in comparison to the previous version. In addition, parts of a cast-iron type have not been used in this case.

The right amount of hydraulic muscle is provided by two pumps in freshly born transmission. One of them is based on the displacement of the variable kind. So, the output is adjustable to needs of your gear box. In addition, the pump uses less power. The second pump is of an electric type. This one is of a smaller size with lower use of energy.

As transmissions progress, the fluid used for them is getting thinner as well. The new gear box offers fluid viscosity of 4.5 centistokes. It is good enough for hydraulic pumps to absorb less energy as well. Additionally, the life span of your transmission is widened.
