Ford Centurion, Past And Future Of Huge SUVs

The history of SUVs has made quite a long way since the first car of such type was released by Chevrolet in 1935. The sizes of SUVs range up to tremendous. One of the legendary models representing full size SUVs is known as Ford Centurion.

Ford Centurion History and Specs

After Chevrolet started production of its Suburban, Ford focused on Bronco. However, the model has failed to become a strong competitor. Nevertheless, Centurion Vehicles known as converter of trucks by Ford made things change. Their modification of four-door Bronco became popular as Centurion Classic.

In fact, Centurion production was based on two trucks by Ford which are F-Series and Ford Bronco. Thus, the auto had a wheelbase longer than Suburban. It also included such parts of Bronco as panels, tailgates and hardtop. Use of fiberglass was substituted with steel later on. Ford Centurion could boast about three rows of seats.

There are two models of Ford Centurion known. These are C150 Classic and C350. The first one was based on Ford F-150 using its chassis and offering AWD as an option. The latter one used Ford F-350 chassis offering AWD as standard. C150 model ran on V8 type of engine. It was sold with 5.0 litres as well as 5.8 litres of displacement while its C350 brother also used V8 engines but of higher opportunities. Modern F-series custom SUVs

The era of custom Ford SUVs is not over though. After the Excursion discontinuation, just like in Ford Centurion times, pickups are still updated and modified by enthusiasts. Among them are Ford F-650 based SUV, Hennessey VelociRaptor and conversion of Ford Excursion by CABT.

Thus, Hennessey has decided to fill the gap between updated 2015 F-150 and famous F-150 SVT Raptor. So, Hennessey VelociRaptor offers powerful 5.0 litre engine of V8 type which produces up to 606 BHP along with 538 lb-ft of torque. The car makes it from 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds offering such improvements as High Flow Air Induction, Fuel Injector Upgrade and Dyno Tuned Chassis.

Custom Autos by Tim also update Fords. They specialize on Excursion in fact. The cars are made to fit a particular customer. For instance, you can order four or six-door vehicle running on diesel or gas. Interior can be updated with captain seats, leather upholstery, navigation and more. The exterior is improved with different boards, chromed door handles and better exhaust. Other options are available as well.

Future of Full-Size SUVs

The new era of monstrous SUVs is blurred enough. Thus, Ford still has not produced a huge SUV officially. The biggest truck by Ford is still the same legendary Excursion which has not being produced since 2007 when gas prices urged the company to stop this lineup. Rumors about 2017 Ford Excursion return still live though. Now that fuel prices are getting lower, many drivers hope to see all loved Excursion being in production again. In the meantime, General Motors is not going to retreat. Famous Suburban has already being announced as 2017 model while 2015 Yukon has not lost its demand. Ford tries to display Expedition as a substitute to Excursion but without much success. So, the only choice for Ford fans is to rely on custom cars based on F-Series.
