The perfect crossover?

Having built an ideal modern crossover and proving its superiority over dozens of its competitors, another equally important question arises. How to remain King of the hill and not roll into the ordinary? Fortunately, for Honda, its employees understand the necessity of balance. All the attractive qualities that were originally laid in the SUV remained in place, continuing to attract family people and those car enthusiasts who put the practicality of their car at the forefront.

In total, there are four main features of the new Honda CR-V, for which, as it seems to me, we all love: universality, competence, reliability and pleasant appearance. 10 points out of 10.

And yet, what’s new offers the new generation CR-V?

The first thing we noticed in the car is its dimensions. We have already accustomed to gradually increasing the size of each next generation, and here we have a compact crossover Honda, which is already difficult to consider as such. The wheelbase of the 2017 model year car stretched in 1.5” in comparison with the previous version, the new car became 1.4” taller and 1.2” longer. Fortunately, all the additional inches mean extra space in the cabin.

Passengers in the back seat received 2 additional inches of legroom in comparison with the model in 2016 (at their disposal now 40.4 in). Competitors such as Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4, this parameter does not exceed 37”. If you fold the rear seats, the luggage compartment will be 10” longer than before. When the rear couch is laid out, the volume of the trunk is 39.1 cu ft, if it is folded – 75.7 cu ft. This is on par with the main competitors, although it is worth noting that the Rogue has a small third row of seats, and this makes it a 7-seat.

The blind zone monitoring system and advanced parking sensors work perfectly, saving the driver from trouble in the parking lots.

Cruise control calmly and confidently drives the car, and it helps to relax in traffic jams. The system of keeping the car on the lane works OK as well but it is not worth it to relax behind the wheel, after all, this is not a full-fledged autonomous control system.

The economy of the 1.5-liter turbocharged “four” with a output of 190 horsepower is roughly comparable to the engine on the Subaru Forester, and far superior in this aspect to the engines of the Toyota RAV4 and Jeep Cherokee. The new engine paired with the CVT works much quieter than the time-tested atmospheric “four” volume of 2.4 liters.

The crossover’s steering wheel is very sharp and precise, especially at low speeds, the suspension well swallows the pits well, but because of this in the turns there are significant rolls.

Magnificent ergonomics of the cabin: it is comfortable and handy. There is everything you need: an armrest, coasters, USB-sockets, compartments for small things.

How is it felt on the road

It’s a pleasure to drive fast on a new CR-V. Despite the fact that this is not a sports car, the crossover is quite suitable for active driving in the city and on the highway, and at the same time, the passengers will feel comfortable – the chassis’s habits are very smooth.

The new CVT works not monotonously, under load “virtual” transmissions drops, when the engine gets to high revolutions. No kicks during work, it feel smooth, there is not much noise from him either.

The new engine surprised with its traction. No, the new Honda CR-V does not ride like a racing car, but there is no lack of traction.

At the same time, fuel consumption during the test drive exceed 32 miles per gallon – this is the best indicator in the class.

Goes a bit UFO, but look nice overall

The appearance of Honda cars continues to change in the direction of cyber and futuristic design. Reflection in this is noticeable in all models of the automaker. In some models, experiments go too far, the most trivial example is the 10th generation Civic Type-R. In other cars of the brand, the search for beauty is less extreme, including the CR-V.

Designers of Honda gracefully disguised the real dimensions of the new CR-V with sharp lines, emphasizing them with muscular fenders and detailed optics. The main attention is attracted to a horizontal chrome plank, it is emphasized by LED lights with a thin line of daytime running lights. The rear lights are massive, with a transparent decorative plastic insert, which is outstanding beyond the body. It is strange that the orange turn signals are made in the form of modest vertical bands, which are practically invisible in daylight.

And if the appearance of the Civic, to put it mildly, a bit recherché, then to the appearance of the crossover Honda, there should be no claims from the layman. New Honda SUV became clearly more attractive than the model that it replaced.

The only thing that remains unchanged for decades is the vertical rear lights, which appeared in the distant 1995 still remain the signature of the exterior design.

Funny, but the basis of the crossover was taken from sporty Civic, and not from the more respectable and capacious model of the Honda Accord sedan, as it might seem logical to many.

Cozy and warm

The interior of the CR-V of 2017 model year is carefully thought out, especially we were pleased with the appearance of the volume control in addition to the 7-inch display of the audio system.

We tested the Civic and quietly hated the capacitive display, which is still offered on most Honda models. We noted the emergence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the infotainment system of CR-V.

Leather interior trim is standard for EX-L and Touring trim levels.

The newly designed interior details of the CR-V 2017 can be safely attributed to the two-level shelf behind the second row of seats, the reconfigurable central console and the fifth-door, electrically-adjustable.

All the controls and buttons required by the driver every day are perfectly marked and easily accessible, except for the double sensors on the sides of the digital instrument panel on the EX model and above.

CR-V was equipped with a new electric power steering with a variable ratio, depending on the speed of movement. In theory, this should help in the controllability of the car at high speeds and make maneuvering even better. According to Honda, the improved feel of the steering wheel will help not only on the ordinary road, but also on light off-road.

The whole system really works. CR-V is an easy-to-drive car, which is very easy to park, the steering wheel is sharp and responsive. It’s really nice to go long and far. It does not matter what will be under the wheels.

With the infotainment system we have already mentioned you can work through a monitor that looks more like an elegant tablet built into the dashboard. It looks beautiful, but in fact it is very uncomfortable. Honda’s proprietary system is characterized by sophisticated control and an outdated, lagging interface. I bet anyone will go mad until he finds the right radio settings or enter the desired destination in the navigator.

Speedometer CR-V is now completely digital. It contains all the important information about the car. Starting from the operation of the all-wheel drive system, fuel economy and other key indicators, and ending with a system of vigilance monitoring tired drivers…

The list of security systems is, of course, much broader. It is quite standard for cars of this class: adaptive cruise control, Lane Keep Assist, blind mirror zone monitoring system, cross traffic system, various traction control and stability control options, and collision avoidance system with automatic Braking.

Speaking of Tech

The crossover uses the same Mac-Pherson front and multi-link rear suspension that was developed for the Civic. From the car, the cunning stabilizer of lateral stability also moved.

As we know the hatchback Civic has good handling, this ability was fully transferred to its all-wheel drive brother. The suspension is moderately rigid, but at the same time, passengers will not feel any discomfort on the irregularities, the car does not go, but flits along the road.

Vibration and noise are practically absent, which puts the Japanese crossover in line with European luxury models.

The most significant change in the novelty can certainly be called the newest 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine of the last generation, which also inherited from Civic.

It develops 190 HP, and despite the fact that he technically has 1 ft lb less torque than an 2.4L, the peak thrust is available already from 2000 revolutions up to 5000. According to preliminary estimates, the EPA, the consumption of CR- V with a new engine will be 28 mpg run through the city, 34 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg in mixed mode. For models with a full drive to these indicators, will be a couple of mpg less.

Under normal conditions, the new 1.5-liter engine seems alive and energetic. This is partly due to the Honda CVT, which, like Accord and Civic, is equipped with a torque converter that provides smooth initial acceleration.

If you do not press the accelerator pedal into the floor and hold it there for a long time, then you will hardly hear annoying buzzing than similar transmissions of some competitors. CVT of 2017 model year CR-V simulates the operation of a conventional automatic transmission, regulating the operation of the engine in normal driving conditions.

On a wet track or in snow, namely with this CR-V is most likely to encounter, the Real Time AWD system, which does not need to be specifically connected, is most justified.

How much does it costs

It would be just fine if all of these safety systems, the all-wheel drive and the new economy engine were standard, but it’s not. They are part of the EX package, the price of which starts at $ 27,555. Those who choose LX for $ 24,945 will get a rear-view camera and nothing more (and the old 2.4-liter VTEC engine).


Driving at the limit of possibilities is not at all what the CR-V or its competitors were for. These compact crossovers are designed for young couples and families who need a more practical car than a sedan. And in this role CR-V is ideal. It is spacious, comfortable and economical; It is these qualities that allow us to assume that the Honda CR-V 2017 will quietly keep the position of the leader of sales among crossovers for some time.
