The new Fiat Tipo 2020 as an alternative to your typical compact car

For 7 years, from 1988 to 1995, Fiat produced the popular Tipo in hatchback, coupe and station wagon models. The Tipo surpassed the Volkswagen Golf in sales and became the number one car in Brazil. This compact car boasted a spacious interior which enticed car owners.

Fiat, the Turin, Italy based automaker will equip the updated Tipo with the latest technology including new engines. In addition, Fiat is launching a crossover version of the Tipo which will be a tie-in with the Fiat 500L, manufactured at the Fiat plant in Kragujevac, Serbia.

As this famous Turin brand already has a platform for this type of model, the cost of production and, most importantly, the price, will be lower. Finally, the mystery Fiat Tipo SUV should provide new life to the Tipo family of cars.

The simple Tipo is being turned into a 5-seat SUV, very similar to the 500X, having a length of 181.1 in. and 5/7 seats. The production of this new version should begin in 2021 and the prototype will make its rounds at the end of 2020. For the time being, we’ll have to sit and wait for the official news and specs, but we can discuss some accurate predictions now.

External Model Data

Compared to its predecessors (the Fiat Tipo 2019 and earlier) the updated Tipo 2020 suffers a bit in its restyling. But, many of the features which make it a best seller remain. The updated version combines all of the advantages of the earlier Tipos and their analogue; the Tempra. These previous models combine being spacious and compact while boasting great features and comfort. The new model uses all of these qualities but adds a more tidy and stylish appearance.

Smooth side contouring along the doors emphasizes the internal features. It features a unique elegance including narrow headlights to complete the picture. Compared to the 2018 model, an updated, much wider grill has been added. The color scheme is as of yet unannounced, but we can all picture what it will look like.

The front bumper has a slightly more flared shape, and small rectangular fog lights have been mounted in the corners under the headlights. A large trapezoidal air intake is located in the middle of the lower part of the bumper. The hood displays more of an aggressive look, complemented by clean cut edges.

The rear lights are fitted within a chrome outline, and curve downward toward the sides. A reverse signal is included in the lights. The rear bumper has a very clean look with the exhaust system and tailpipes being hidden quite well.

The design of this car has a very relaxed feel; smooth lines prevail. The body cover harmoniously flows into the roof. It has the appearance of a slick, compact car.

The new version has the following dimensions:

  • length of sedan, hatchback, station wagon: 4540 mm (178.7 in.), 4370 mm (172 in.), 4570 mm (179.9 in.)
  • width: 1790 mm (70.5 in.)
  • height: 1490 mm (58.7 in.)
  • ground clearance – 150 mm (6 in.)
  • trunk volume – 520 liters (18.4 cu.ft.)
  • wheels – available in 16 and 17 inches

Cabin Functions

The interior is quite minimalist, but quite attractive with high quality materials. Fiat has tried to make the interior as simple as possible without sacrificing function. The proof is that Fiat has made loads of options available for the buyer.

The steering wheel contains a load of different controls, and the dashboard is loaded with indicators. The center console contains a small multimedia display separated from the main console by a row of buttons. Underneath, air ducts and climate control are found in the form of three circles.

In contrast to the compactness of the body, the back seats boast more space than the competitors, and Fiat themselves say that three NBA players can easily fit in the backseats. If there only happen to be two, then a convenient central armrest with two cupholders can lowered.

The interior materials, including upholstery are all of high quality. The trunk is quite spacious, and the rear seats can be folded down if needed for more room. In prototype photos, the Fiat Tipo has a color scheme of silver and gray shades that emphasize the clean and slick body design. You can find all the usual accoutrements; power windows and mirror controls, 6 airbags, a 5-inch touchscreen display, audio system, light and rain sensors, climate control, parking sensors, cruise control, and a high grade navigation system. Extras include a trailer hitch and a speech recognition function.

The technical characteristics of the Fiat Tipo 2018 and 2020 are not much different from each other.

It is assumed that the new model will have the following indicators:

  • diesel / gasoline: there are options with diesel engines (1.3 liters, 1.6 liters), also gas (1.4 liters, 1.6 liters)
  • gearbox: automatic, mechanical, six-speed
  • fuel consumption 57.4 mpg (petrol); 63.5 mpg (diesel)
  • tank volume – 12.7 gal
  • engine power – from 95 to 120 horsepower

The petrol modifications include a 1.4 liter four-cylinder engine which creates 95 hp. and 127 Nm of torque and an engine with a volume of 1.6 liters with 110 hp and 152 Nm of thrust. The 1.4L engine accelerates to a 60 mph in 11.1 seconds, and continues to a maximum speed of 115 mph. the 1.6L engine accelerates to a 0 mph 10.8 seconds, and the maximum speed is pegged at 119 mph.

A diesel line of engines “The Fiat Tipo MultiJet” have either 1.3 or 1.6 liter engines, which produce 95, 120 hp. and 200, 320 Nm thrust, respectively. The 1.3L has manual transmission while the 1,6 is produced as an automatic. Detailed specifications of the stronger version are not yet available, but a weaker diesel engine will accelerate the car to 114 mph, arriving at a 60 mph in 11.4 seconds.

Competition in the market

As this model is quite unique and does not quite have the standard characteristics of other brands, it has few competitors that can compete on a direct basis. However, there are still a few competitors when choosing a car in this price category: The Opel Astra and Hyundai Tucson.

As a comparison:

The cars: Opel Astra / Hyundai Tucson

  • Length, height, width: 4419 mm (174 in.) – 1510 mm (59.5 in.) – 1814 (71.4 in.) / 4475 mm (176.2 in.) – 1650 mm (65 in.) – 1850 mm (72.8 in.)
  • Diesel / Petrol: Petrol / Petrol, Diesel
  • Transmission: Automatic, 6 speeds, mechanical, five-speed / Mechanical, automatic, six-speed
  • Fuel consumption: 26.4 mpg / 27.3 mpg
  • Engine power: 140 horsepower / 132 horsepower

Comparing these competitors with the Fiat Tipo 2020, it can be concluded that the fuel consumption of the Fiat is the most economical, but the Opel is the most powerful in direct comparison. The dimensions do not vary much by car, just that the Hyundai is a bit larger and taller as it is a crossover.
