The next Tesla will be called Model Y

By

After the recent launch of the Tesla Model 3, Elon Musk, Executive Director of Tesla announced plans to capitalize on the success and popularity of Tesla with yet another model, the Model Y.

This new model will be the introduction for an all-electric compact SUV
Demand for the new Model Y is expected to reach almost 1 million units per year, making it one of the most successful vehicles in production.

Tesla Model Y release date predictions

Speculation abounds regarding the release date that we’ll first see the new Tesla, but it’s unexpected before the debut (and hopeful success) of the Model 3, which in itself isn’t expected tto arrive before 2017 / 18.

Musk goes on to say that “the priority vehicle development after the Model 3 would be the Model Y, the compact SUV, because that’s also a car that we expect to see demand in the 500,000 to 1 million unit per year level”.

This means that any full production model is unlikely to be seen before the end of this current decade.
2020 is the most likely target for public release, although of course things could change; as it stands at the moment, the Model Y is the first of its kind, if some of the larger and more established manufacturers jump on the bandwagon, they could steal some of Musk’s thunder.

Tesla Model Y possible price

There have been no official announcements regarding price, after all, the concept hasn’t even been built, let alone costed, but if the compact SUV is to compete (and sell in the numbers that Musk is talking about), the price must be competitive.

If the Model Y is to go head-to-head with the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 et al, then despite having added brand value, it really must be in the region of $50,000.

Tesla | The future of all things automotive?

While the large manufacturers are still working on hybrid technology (many having not yet incorporated it successfully within their line-up), Tesla have been working on the future; surely, anything with a gasoline or diesel engine is already old technology? We’ve had internal combustion power for over a century.
It takes someone with the foresight of Musk to fully understand what needs to be done, how to do it and even finance it. Musk’s whole ethos is about changing the world and humanity, usually with the use of disruptive technology, and that’s exactly what Tesla are about; if you’re looking to change the future, you don’t use the past.

The popularity of Tesla grows daily; just one week after the first unveiling of the Model 3, global reservations hit 325,000 units, the first full electric sedan, the Model S was at one point, the world’s number one best-selling plug in electric vehicle.

Tesla seem to have got the blend just right; performance, power, luxury and of course, price; perceived value can only get you so far, any product needs to be competitive within the market and Tesla have hit it just right.
