Giving advice as to what is the best of… anything, is often fraught with danger.

After all, who is to say that one particular vehicle is better than the other, surely, much of the choice is purely subjective and personal?
If you’re looking for the best SUV of 2017, read on; we’ve used a number of sources to compile a list for what could be the best SUV’s for 2017, from general consensus, industry insiders, facts and data, including numbers sold in this last year.

The best SUV for 2017 – Compact

This is perhaps the most hotly contested segment of the market, nearly all manufacturers have models competing for your hard earned dollars in this sector; Chevrolet, Honda, Mazda, Jeep, Ford, GMC, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen are the main rivals, the biggest surprise is just how few domestic manufacturers are in that list, and the top three are all Japanese. Here is our chart of the best compact SUV to buy.

5. Chevrolet Equinox $23,995 – $36,685

The Chevy comes in at number 5 on the list, selling just 143,202 this last year. While the top five are quite evenly matched, the Equinox lags someway behind, even from the fourth placed Escape.

4. Ford Escape $24,645 – $31,895

181,638 units sold makes the Ford Escape number four on the list for the best SUV for 2017, and the highest placed domestic manufacturer.

3. Nissan Rogue $24760 – $32250

The Nissan Rogue really did only just pip the Ford to third place, selling just 543 more – 182,181 in total.

2. Honda CR-V $24,985 – $34,635

Our personal favorite, the Honda CR-V isn’t far behind the RAV4, selling 195,092 units in total.

1. Toyota RAV4 $25,850 – $37,090

Proving that price isn’t the be all and end all, the RAV4 is the most expensive compact crossover here, both in base trim and fully loaded, yet it still managed to sell 197,771 units.

What is best compact SUV? If you’re in the market for a compact SUV for 2017, there are plenty of choices out there, and regardless of what sales numbers say, it could be that another manufacturer or model suits you better. The best advice we can offer you is to talk to a few dealers, perhaps even take a ride in one or two and see what fits you best; that’s perhaps the best thing about such a competitive market, there is always something to fit you, rather than you having to fit with them. It’s our best SUV 2017 choice in compact class.
