Toyota Prius vs Honda Civic Design

Honda Civic Hybrid available only as sedan, while Toyota offer standard Prius as a 5-door hatchback or even MPV (Toyota Prius V) The design is actually a matter of taste, but both cars looks futuristic and Prius have more aerodynamic shape. In advance, Civic looks like ordinary compact sedan. Interiors of both cars look modern and full of different gadgets, displays and so on. Civic has more driver-oriented dashboard, and better materials are used. Multimedia system and smartphone connectivity (HondaLink system) is overall similar to Toyota’s. In comparison with Prius luggage capacity of 21 cubic feet, Civic has tiny trunk with 12,5 cubic ft. It is even less than in Ford Focus or Chevrolet Cruze. Passenger’s compartment are no less spacious than in Toyota Prius though.

Civic vs Prius Trim levels

Honda Civic hybrid sedan is available in 4 trim levels. The first one, base version get full power windows and mirrors, air conditioner, telescopic steering wheel, cruise control, rearview camera, keyless entry and start-stop ignition button, 7-inch touchscreen display, 60/40 split folding rear seat, 15-inch wheels. The second trim named Leather includes in addition to basic the following entries: foglights, automatic headlights, heated mirrors, leather upholstery, heated front seats. Two others trims, Navi and Leather with Navi adding navigation system (with HD radio) to basic and Leather version respectively. Toyota Prius is more equipped in the basic version, and even better in top trims. But what is for pricing?

Engines and Safety

Honda Civic hybrid has 1.5L 4 cylinder 8-valve inline engine, produces 90 hp and 97 lb ft of torque. It has more advanced Li-ion battery than Ni-MH in Prius, but electric motor is weaker – only 20kW and that is why the overall output of Civic hybrid powertrain is less – it is 110 hp and 127 lb ft of torque, comparing to 134 hp in Prius. But because Civic is lighter the performance characteristics are nearly the same, the acceleration from 0 to 60 takes about 10 seconds. Both cars have the same safety features, including front and side airbags, curtain airbags, forward collision and lane departure warning systems. In addition to this, Prius has knee airbag for driver. IIHS rated Civic sedan “Good” in all possible tests, NHTSA gives Civic top 5-star rating overall. So, the Civic hybrid sedan has scored more points for safety than Prius.

Toyota Prius is more affordable, better-equipped, more fuel efficient. Honda Civic hybrid has better interior materials quality, safety rating and more discreet exterior design. Performance of the cars is in par. The final score is 4:3 and the winner is 2015 Toyota Prius.
