New 2017 Toyota RAV4 — Debut of production hybrid

By

The Toyota company has put high hopes on its Rav4 crossover. The car was fully updated this year, which is not surprising given that there have only been four generations throughout the existence of the model.

However, the version that made its debut at the International motor show in New York is the first of its kind among all the earlier SUV products of Toyota. The thing is that the fourth generation of the crossover was performed in a hybrid modification. Of course, the manufacturer already has a hybrid version of the Highlander, but it’s in a different league.

The car also has veneers, which will be available for models with traditional internal combustion engines, but somewhat later than for the hybrid. As is already well-known there have been a significant number of changes. The reissue was subjected to exterior alterations and there have been modifications relating to the interior design. Of course, under the hood now is a completely new power plant, and the equipment has been improved with several new interesting options.

2017 Toyota RAV4 release date

The full specifications of the new RAV4 have not been unveiled by Toyota but they are likely to be the same as for the current generation car debuted during the official presentation of the hybrid in New York. Probably before the start of sales, which should be from late 2016 in the U.S., we will find out all the specifications of the refined powertrain.

Release date: late 2016

2017 Toyota RAV4 price

As for the equipment, the Toyota Company have not yet spread any official information about the price. Obviously, the existence of a hybrid power plant and the richest customization options will make this version more expensive compared with traditional internal combustion engines.

The price is expected to be within $25,000-$30,000

2017 RAV4 exterior

Designers and engineers have decided not to limit themselves to minor modifications, and have introduced quite serious innovations in the appearance of the body. As a result, on the background of the standard RAV4 it will be easy to distinguish the hybrid version. The front part is completely new. The front end has a narrow radiator grille with the original design of the area around the grille.

The compact headlight optics are very attractive. There are lurking in a pronounced rib along the edges of the front bumper. In the lower part is located the imposing bumper, with the “lip” lifted high, as well as fairly classic round fog lights, which were installed in a separate section almost at the edge of the front wheel arches. From the side the car looks strong and lean, with slightly flared wheel arches, original sills, large glazed doors and neat roof rails. It is also worth noting the inflated casings of the rear-view mirrors with LED light strips that will duplicate the turn signals.

Especially for the 2017 Toyota RAV4 hybrid are offered exclusive 17-inch light alloy wheels with a unique design.

The rear part of the car is also not spared the changes, which are highly visible. They include a retouched bumper and modified lights. Instead of the standard antenna on the trunk lid can now be seen a shark’s fin, giving the car a little more of a sporty and brutal look. As you can see, on the exterior the specialists have done a good job in making some useful and interesting changes and have achieved essentially what they wanted for potential customers. A number of comments that were sent to the manufacturer after the release of the fourth generation of the popular SUV were taken into account in the finalization of the hybrid versions. As you remember, these same improvements will soon be used for a crossover with traditional internal combustion engines.

To further emphasize the uniqueness of the hybrid, the company has decided to add six new exterior colors to its range.

2017 RAV4 equipment

The company announced that a Rav4 hybrid crossover will be offered with two trim levels – the Limited and XLE. We are talking about the most packed versions, the list the equipment for which is long. The key components of most interest are a multi-function steering wheel; 4.2 inch TFT display trip computer; electric adjustment of front seats; heating, ventilation and massage functions for front seats; leather upholstery; climate control; sound system; multimedia system; multimedia display with touch control on 7-inch; navigation system; rear view camera; parking sensors; system of monitoring of blind zones; the system of assistance when starting uphill; help system during the descent from steep slopes; cruise control; airbags; curtain airbags; camera circular view;  Safety Sense security system; button to start the engine, etc. Unfortunately, the official list of options is not available yet, so we can focus only on preliminary data. Anyway, from the Toyota hybrid SUV, you should expect only the best modern features that are available for the RAV4.

2017 Toyota RAV4 interior

The changes inside are not as great in number as on the outside, but they are still present. Basically, the technical part has been modernized. In fact, there is nothing surprising in these changes. The interior of the 2017 Toyota RAV4 initially pleases with the high-quality materials used, good decorative inserts and quality comfortable seats. In addition, here the specialists of the Toyota Company have put significant thought into this. They have made adjustments in the front panel and center console. So, behind the multifunctional steering wheel is hiding a new dashboard, where the speedometer and tachometer now have a separate well. Between them, there is space for an on-board computer with a 4.2 inch TFT screen.

As for the center console, the controls remain in their previous places and the buttons have not been moved, since the ergonomics of the previous generation car was well. The multimedia system has undergone slight changes and now boasts a new display with the screen size increased to 7 inches.

The company noted that despite the presence of the hybrid power plant, the volume of the luggage compartment is not affected. This means only one thing – as before, the Toyota hybrid RAV4 will have 20,3 cubic ft (577 litres) of space behind the rear seats. Without the rear passengers and when the car needs to carry something larger, the rear seats can be folded and a free luggage compartment of 60,2 cubic ft (1705 litres) appears.

2017 Toyota RAV4 engine specs

We only know that the power level of the hybrid will surpass all versions equipped with traditional internal combustion engines. The composition of the power plant will include an electric motor and a gasoline engine with a volume 2.5 liters.

Most likely, we are talking about the engine, which is offered as the flagship petrol engine at the moment. If so, then its power is 180 horsepower, and its torque 171 lb ft (233 Nm). Its maximum speed is 115 miles per hour, and it can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 9.2 seconds. Due to the work of the all-wheel drive the average consumption indicated is in the range of 20 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. This gives on average 27 mpg in mixed mode operation. Therefore, when the electric motor is added, the power increases, as well as the maximum speed and acceleration, but it will definitely reduce the level of fuel consumption. Now this is all there is to tell about the technical component of the new car.
