New 2016 Ford Explorer Goes Platinum


The first generation of Ford Explorer was released in 1991 as a replacement for Ford Bronco II. The second generation came into production in 1994, being modified year-to-year. There are also third and fourth generation of the model. 2016 Ford Explorer refer to the fifth generation of the model which debuted in 2010.

The brand-new Ford Explorer 2016 was shown in November 2014 in LA Autoshow and Ford claimed it would be on sale in the US market in the middle of 2015 as a 2016 model. Ford Explorer 2016 Is Fully EcoBoosted

Regarding technical specifications, the most notable change in the new Explorer is a new engine, 2.3L EcoBoost engine, it is a replacement for previous less powerful 2.0L engine. The output of new EcoBoost is 270 horsepower, instead of 240 hp in the old model. Due to the usage of comparatively small 4-cylinder engines it delivers better fuel efficiency than V6 or V8 engine. However, Ford isn’t give up V6 engines.

For the new 2016 Ford Explorer would be available two V6 engines, the first one is Duratec V6, 3.5L with the output of 290 horsepower (which comes as standard), and the modified turbocharged version of that engine – Ecoboost V6, with the massive amount of 365 horsepower. All the engines excluding most powerful V6 could be equipped with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive drivetrain layout. EcoBoost V6 comes only as AWD car. The transmission is 6-speed automatic, no matter what engine and trim level you choose.

The fuel consumption is for basic 3.5 liter V6 Explorer is 20 mpg combined for FWD (17 city and 24 for highway). With all-wheel drive layout it drops slightly in 1 mpg to 19 for combined and 16/23 for city and highway driving respectively.
With turbocharged 4-cylinder engine fuel efficiency of Explorer increased to 22 mpg combined and 19/28 for highway (FWD) and 21/18/26 for AWD. The most powerful EcoBoost V6 has 18 mpg in combined mode, 16 mpg for city driving and 22 mpg for highway driving. As it was mentioned above, turbo V6 is equipped only with all wheel drive transmission.

Redesigned Explorer trim levels

The car is available in 5 trim levels.

Basic trim level includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with auto on/off, roof rails, rearview camera, cruise control, power driver seat, air conditioner, 4,2-inch display with FordSync system and Bluetooth connectivity. Not to mention full power accessories. You can’t say that basic trim has everything you want. It really lack of climate control and probably a better screen for infontainment system. One of the Explorer rivals, 2016 Honda Pilot has nearly the same equipment and also lack proper climate control.

XLT trim adds only a slight impovements on both interior and exterior: body colored door handles, foglamps, parking sensors in rear bumper, leather-wrapped steering wheel, door code pad, power seat for passenger and satellite radio.
There are two extra packages available for XLT, one is adding dual-zone climate control and premium sound system with bigger screen; the other offers heated leather seats and parking sensors in front.

Limited has the second package equipment from XLT plus bigger rims (20-inch), power liftgate system with handsfree opening, chrome trimming for exterior, power pedals, ventilated seats, second row seats heating, power-foldable third row, power adjustable steering wheel and other luxury options like Sony sound system with 10 speakers. In this trim Explorer is almost fully packed with cool options, most of them refered to higher class cars.
Option package for Limited has many other features like automatic parking, high beams and wipers; massaging front seats and other.

Sport trim is similar to Limited, but has many of its equipment only optional. The most notable change in comparison with other Explorers is special matte trimming for exterior details as well as interior, sport tuned suspension and 20-inch wheels.

The second most noticeable change in the 2016 model year Explorer is new high-end trim called “Platinum”, loaded up with equipment could be found on luxury segment cars, such as quilted leather on seats, interior made with a huge usage of aluminum and wood. This trim is also featured powerfull hi-fi audio system. As for exterior, Platinum models have larger wheels, LED headlights and other minor details.

Limited and Premium trim levels have many more luxurious features. Almost everything is powered, including even pedals adjustment

Proper mid-size SUV capable of carrying 7 people. Wide engine range and trim levels for all tastes. Luxurious on the top trim. However, more expensive than closest competitors.
